Road trauma - injury or death cause by vehicles. This is the major cause of koala deaths in the Macedon Ranges
Many of the roads in the Macedon Ranges Shire cross through koala habitat, often these roads cut through a koala home range. Blackforest Drive near the Gisborne freeway exit is a high risk area for koalas. Many have been killed there. Other roads around towns in the Shire also have koala fatalities.
The majority of koala road trauma occurs during the breeding season - September to March. Nearly all are between dusk and dawn. Koalas are not like most other wildlife you could see on the roads at night. They do not run away quickly, if anything they tend to just sit there, blinded by headlights.
Please drive carefully in koala areas at night. If you see a koala, slow down or stop if possible so it can move of. If you see a koala road sign it means that you are moving through koala habitat.
